Mumbai, India — 20th May 2025: Ground Up's pilot carbon dioxide removal (CDR) project, Nandani, based in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, has been rated “A” by Sylvera. This has followed the facility issuing its first CDR credits under the Biochar Production and Storage removal pathway of the Isometric registry. This marks a major milestone in the company's effort to scale durable carbon dioxide removal in India and provide every Indian farmer with access to biochar by 2040.

Phase 2 of the Nandani facility is expected to be completed by July 2026. At capacity, the facility will have the potential to produce ~7000 tonnes of biochar and remove ~11,700 tonnes of CO₂ every year, becoming the largest Indian biochar project on the Isometric Registry.

The Nandani facility utilises post-harvest sugarcane residue, which is otherwise predominantly burned, as its primary feedstock. The residue is collected from thousands of farmers in and around Kolhapur. It is then processed using leading pyrolysis technology from Pyreg GmbH, where the biomass is heated at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen, producing biochar, a stable and durable form of carbon.

Once applied to the soil, Ground Up’s biochar fosters the growth of organic matter, increases water retention, soil organic carbon, nutrient availability, and significantly improves crop yield. Early market development trials have seen strong demand, with farmers in and around Kolhapur actively purchasing biochar for their fields.

With a “Hygroden/Organic Carbon” ratio of less than 0.2, the carbon sequestered through Ground Up's biochar posits a minimum durability of 200 years.

Ground Up would like to thank the Isometric Registry for its rigorous guidance through the verification and issuance process, and Offstream, whose support has been instrumental from project development through to credit delivery.
